One of the greatest secrets of natural health is the combination of lemon and water. The benefits of lemon water are many. And those who drink it regularly know the truth about lemon water and weight loss.
Here's a look at some of the many benefits of lemon water, particularly in regard to the connection between lemon water and weight loss.
Lemon Water and Weight Loss
Studies on mice have shown that lemon suppresses body fat. So, if you're trying to shed weight… Try drinking just one cup of lemon water in the morning is an easy way to kick-start your metabolism.
A cup of fresh lemon water contains only 61 calories and has 21 grams of carbohydrates in the form of fiber and has zero fat. So it is low in calories and has lots of natural vitamins and minerals.
Not only does the lemon water boost your metabolism helping you burn more calories throughout the day, but the pulpy content adds an extra bit of fiber to your diet.
Lemons contain a significant amount of pectin fiber. This soluble fiber provides bulk and digests slowly, helping you feel full. Pectin encourages weight loss because it helps to limit the number of fat cells you can absorb.
And it doesn't hurt that the lemon is a refreshing addition to the water. The added flavor can encourage you to drink more water and fewer sugary beverages. Lemon water and weight loss go hand-in-hand.
If you want to supercharge your lemon water, try adding a pinch of cinnamon and/or a dash of cayenne pepper. Cinnamon can increase the metabolism of glucose and cayenne curbs your appetite as well as help you to burn more calories.
Lemon Water Helps You Cleanse Your System
Water has long been known as an essential part of any weight loss and/or detox program because of its ability to flush toxins from the body. The enzymes in lemons act a diuretic which causes more frequent urination and thus a more regular elimination of toxins.
Also, studies show that citric acid found in lemons stimulates the liver, causing it to eliminate harmful toxins from the blood and turn fat into energy.
Lemon Water Helps You Digest Your Food
Good digestion is key not only in weight loss but also in the promotion of good general health.
Because the acid in lemons is like the acids found in your digestive system… Drinking lemon juice every day can help your body digest food quicker and better.
Lemon water is said to stimulate and purify the liver. This means you'll get the benefits of healthy food faster… And the foods that maybe aren't so good for you, can break down and be eliminated faster too.
Lemon Water Helps You Stay Healthy
- Lemons are an outstanding source of vitamin C, the immunity-boosting nutrient. (Did you know that just one lemon can provide you with almost double the daily recommended amount of vitamin C?)
- Cleanse your system naturally
- Aids digestion
- Reduces inflammation
- Excellent source of potassium
Lemon Water Helps Your Skin Radiance
The natural ability of lemons to help your body eliminate toxins has many benefits. One of those benefits is clearer and brighter skin. Plus, the antioxidants found in lemons can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes. Even scars and age spots can become less visible through the use of lemon. You can apply lemon topically too! Vitamin C can also kill certain types of bacteria linked to skin acne.
Lemon Water Helps You Feel Better
The scent of lemon is used in aromatherapy because it possesses powerful mood-lifting qualities. It stands to reason that drinking lemon water has a similar effect on your body and mind. And believe it or not, taking it the sunny yellow color of a lemon nurtures the spirit. Some people have even found that the regular use of lemon helps ease depression and anxiety.
Because lemons contain more negatively charged ions than most other foods, it can cause a powerful reaction with the ions in your digestive system. That reaction creates a great amount of energy.
I'm sure you've noticed that you tend to be more active when you're in a better mood… And that increased activity leads to better health.
Conclusion
Drinking a cup of warm lemon water first thing after waking up is probably the single most beneficial practice you can do for your body. You lose water each night through respiration and sweat. The simple habit of drinking fresh, pure lemon water each morning will help your body and mind in many ways.
It's no wonder why natural health lovers often think of lemon water and weight loss together…
And it's so easy… Just add the juice from one fresh lemon into a glass of lukewarm water. Add one teaspoon of honey (if needed). Drink it on an empty stomach each morning.
The great thing about lemon water is that you can adjust the recipe to fit your tastes. If one lemon is too much for you, try half, or feel free to just add slices of the lemon to your water. This will allow you to still enjoy the citrus without overwhelming your taste buds. All you need is one cup of lemon water every day to set yourself on a path to healthier living.
It’s refreshing to read about the benefits of water with lemon.
I recently wrote a post showing that water is important for the brain, but your post gives even more depth to its significance.
I especially like the fact that you pointed out that lemon can be used externally to eliminate toxins.
Thanks for saying hello Judy!
Hi Jackie,
I found reading your feature on lemon water totally validated the way I begin my day – why with a glass of freshly squeezed lemon water, of course!! 😀
It was so interesting to read about all the other benefits of lemons to one’s health, too.
Have you come across any information to suggest that the adding of a teaspoon of salt to the lemon juice – natural whole salt with its trace minerals as found in Himalayan Pink Salt, for example – might be even more beneficial for the body? Also I was wondering if you preferred to use organic lemons when preparing your drink, rather than just the regular lemons you can buy at the store?
Anyhow, your page detailed so many positive effects of taking lemon water that I found myself wondering why anyone would not want to start the day with a glass of refreshing lemon water!
Great article!!
Nick
Hi Nick!
I have heard of adding salt to the lemon water when the aim is to cleanse or flush the body. Adding salt can also help with constipation too. And yes, Himalayan pink salt is best for this purpose!
Thanks for connecting.
Hi Jackie,
I used to drink warm lemon water with honey every morning for almost a year and then I gave it up because I was adding more and more honey and thought it was added calories I didn’t need. Your post has inspired me to start it up again. This time without the honey. Do you know if you would get the same benefits if you added a non-calorie sweetener like sweet’n’low?
Gina
Hi Gina,
I’m not a big fan of sweetnlow. Try it without any sweeter and maybe back off on the lemon a bit. Try it first with 1/2 lemon and I think you’ll find you won’t need sweetener. Or try Myers lemons, which are naturally sweeter. So happy I inspired you to start again!
Thats a good article about lemon water and how its help to reduce our weight. Water is undeniable a great way to remove toxins that exists in our body, and with the help of lemon that process can be faster with frequent urination. Sometimes, i drink lemon water after eating beef or lamb that needed extra digestion process, with lemon water it has the acid that i need to break down the molecules of protein from the beef.

Great information, time worthy.
Is there any negative impact if someone takes lime water in access? How much quantity should be taken by any person for a day?
Hi there,
Too much citrus can cause tooth erosion and cause teeth to be sensitive to hot or cold foods. Otherwise, you’ll know you’re drinking too much if you develop heartburn or are peeing too often. (Lemons have a high content of vitamin C which can have a diuretic effect. Too much of anything is not a good thing. 🙂 Thanks for connecting!
I had come across you post a few days back and started drinking lemon water along with honey in the mornings. I did not use warm water since the weather here is extremely hot so instead replaced it with ice cold water.
I can tell that I feel much better about my weight. I feel fresh in the morning and it keeps me full. It really works!
Hi Shrey,
The reason room temperature or warm water is suggested is because cold water slows digestion. But, I get it. It’s not really fun to drink something warm when it’s hot outdoors. Just try not to take it ice cold! You’ll get better results. Thanks for connecting. 🙂
Thanks for sharing such unusual benefits of lemon water. I am going to share your blog in my social channels.
Great job!
