natural remedies for hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids, also known as piles, are something many women deal with at some point in their lives. Approximately half of all Americans have had hemorrhoids by the age of fifty, but only about 4% need medical treatment, which means natural remedies for hemorrhoids have proven to be effective.

Alternative medicine practitioners believe the most effective way to treat hemorrhoids is to combine a variety of approaches. Below I've divided the natural remedies for hemorrhoids into 5 categories, including lifestyle solutions, home remedies, Ayurvedic remedies, and Yoga.

But first, let’s take a closer look at the symptoms of piles and the various reasons that trigger this condition.

Symptoms of Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the anus and in the rectum that may have prolapsed. Hemorrhoids are very much like varicose veins. The veins enlarge and lose their elasticity, and the result is a saclike protrusion on the wall of the anus.

They are not tumors or growths.

Sometimes they develop into painful inflammation and bleed.

Some of the common symptoms of this condition are:

  • Presence of blood clots around the anus
  • Presence of blood in stools
  • Itching and irritation near anus
  • Frequent urge to pass stools even when there are no stools
  • Discomfort and pain in the anal region

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

natural remedies for hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids commonly occur during pregnancy because of hormonal changes, the pressure of a growing uterus, and the strain of bearing down for delivery.

The veins located in and around the anus or rectum develop inflammation due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Chronic diarrhea or constipation
  • Hard stools
  • Aging
  • Pregnancy
  • Anal intercourse
  • Sitting for long hours on the toilet
  • Obesity
  • Insufficient fiber in the diet
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Lack of adequate sleep
  • Inadequate intake of fluids
  • Excessive smoking and alcohol consumption [leading to chronic constipation]
  • Food allergies
  • Hereditary

Different Types of Hemorrhoids

There are two main types of hemorrhoids – internal and external. As the names suggest, internal hemorrhoids develop inside the anus, while the external hemorrhoids develop outside and around the rectum.

The internal piles can be further divided into four categories.

First Degree

Do not prolapse

Second degree

Prolapse with strain but reduces naturally

Third grade

Prolapse with strain and can be reduced with manual intervention

Fourth degree

Prolapsed permanently and there is no hope for reduction

External piles can be become thrombosed and prolapsed when the hemorrhoid turns blue or purple, leading the clogged veins to rupture and start bleeding.

Since, natural remedies for hemorrhoids are effective only to a certain extent when the  condition is fourth degree, doctors quite often suggest surgical excision or rubber band ligation.

  1. Great website here lots of useful information. I now have knew knowledge about hemorrhoids i didn’t a few minutes ago. Not only do you have legit information but you offer great products.I’ll be trying myself and recommending to people. It’s not everyday you come across good honest people like yourself. Thanks keep up the good work Jackie

  2. I’m so glad that there are plenty of natural remedies for hemorrhoids. My female family members who are in their fifties will surely appreciate the information that you have presented here.

The other solutions such as drinking enough water, sleeping well and walking seem pretty straightforward, and many people can do this. But do you think old people who have joint problems should be doing those yoga positions?

    Thanks a lot!

    • Hi Farhan…and thanks for the feedback. The three asanas can always be modified. Pavanamuktasana can even be done in bed if need be. Legs up the wall give great relief!

  3. Hello,

I’ve to say that I’m really impressed by the amount of effort you put into this article! It’s obvious that you sincerely want to help people.

Fortunately, I don’t have hemorrhoids. I can imagine that it can be really unpleasant. I’ve learned a lot of things from this post. For example, I didn’t know that lemon juice can help! I absolutely agree that prevention is better than cure.

    Julius

    • Hi Julius, Yes, thank you…I’m happy my desire to help folks is coming through in the posts. Thanks for stopping by.

  4. Hi, your post is very interesting. I really love how you explained about all the symptoms and causes, I had no idea so many things could cause hemorrhoids.
Something very useful for my knowledge is that lemon juice and coconut oil could help in hemorrhoids, these are things that I use in everyday life so I could recommend them to people suffering from hemorrhoids.
Also Yoga moves seem very interesting, and a very healthy alternative.
I’ll definitely show your post to some acquaintances suffering from hemorrhoids, you have a lot of great tips 😀

    • Hi Ashley! Thanks for the feedback and for passing it on. 🙂 We’re doing a series of Natural Remedies posts, so check back for more.

  5. I like the that you published this post for many reasons, the most important being that people typically are embarrassed to talk about it. That’s why its so great that you did, because somebody has to say something about how to treat hemorrhoids.
I also enjoyed your advice for avoiding them. It seems that this advice is not only useful for hemorrhoids but also for health in general.
    Great work!

    • Hey Alec, It seems silly that we are embarrassed about such things huh? Especially when so many people suffer from them. One of the interesting things I learned in my research is that humans are the only species that develop hemorrhoids…which tells me that it must be related to our diet or how we eliminate. Prevention is best. Except we don’t think about it when we’re younger.

  6. I had a friend who had hemorrhoids who was very shy of it. I was probably the one who knew about his condition. I wish I knew what I know now, after reading your article, to help him in his recovery and to assist him in those very challenging and painful moments. Will definitely send him the link to your website.

  7. Thanks for this educational article on hemorrhoids. I admit that I don’t know anything about it until one of my colleague fainted at work due to profuse bleeding from this disease condition.

Apparently, the hemorrhoids has relapsed and she needs to have it excised again. Very painful procedure. Shouldn’t they be on anesthesia or something?

Anyways, these are great tips that I think she can practice at home – lemon juice is the best, I take them everyday. Will share your tips with her. Hopefully she will recover soon.

    • Sometime doctors use general anesthesia. It depends how bad they are..but most of the time they just numb the area and remove, or do the rubber band ligation.

Thanks for sharing and I hope your friend recovers soon.

  8. Thanks for all the information. It was very helpful. Some other thoughts…
