The Benefits of Online Yoga

The physical benefits of yoga are the main reason this 5,000-year-old practice is still widely popular today.

From simple beginning poses to more challenging poses, yoga works to exercise all your muscle groups… even some that you wouldn't regularly use. This helps to give you a more toned and fit shape, as well as teaching you breathing exercises that will aid in respiratory function.

Besides the physical benefits, many people engage in yoga for the relaxing effect it has on the mind. Even doctors recommend it as a great way to reduce stress and achieve a peaceful frame of mind. Practiced regularly, it can help maintain a more stable mood.

Many people prefer doing yoga at home for different reasons. Some are self-conscious among strangers; others just like the convenience of not having to drive to a studio at a certain hour.

You can work at your own pace and at a time that is most convenient for you.

Identify Your Yoga Needs

Now that you have decided to reap the benefits of taking an online yoga class, you'll have to identify which ones are right for you. This means focusing on your needs, as well as finding the best sources for yoga on the internet.

While you may be eager to try the more advanced poses, remember that your muscles may not be limber enough for many of them. It's better to look for beginners classes and master them, before advancing to intermediate and advanced courses.

This is an important factor because yoga classes can last from 30 minutes up to one full hour. You may be limiting what you're seeking to get out of yoga if interrupted during the class.

There are yoga courses to suit every lifestyle and budget, from free to paid sessions. In addition to figuring out what's best for your budget, you'll also want to find instructors you like, and that may take time and experimentation. Once you identify courses that appeal to you, you're ready to begin.

Bring Your Own Equipment

The drawback to doing yoga at home is that you'll have to buy your own supplies. It also means you'll need a space, where you can stretch out.

In choosing this space, make sure it's free of distractions, such as the phone or television. Try to limit other from walking in on you unannounced.

Most importantly, you'll need a mat. You'll also want to have a strap, a few blocks, a blanket, and a bolster or two. If you're going to perform at your best, you'll want to feel comfortable and at ease.

If you have trouble understanding the instructor or continuously misinterpret her intent, you may want to look for a different class. Without proper understanding, you may lose your interest, or you may even risk an injury.

Working at home, you don't have the performance of classmates to spur you on to do your best. Even on days that you don't feel your best, it's still important to practice. For this reason, you'll have to find ways to keep yourself motivated to continue with your online classes. But this is usually not a problem because once you begin to practice online yoga, you'll feel so much better in your body, you'll never want to stop your practice.

Why Online Yoga is Better Than Studio Yoga

  • Studio yoga is typically expensive on a per session basis – Some studios charge up to $25 a class
  • Online yoga allows you to practice in the comfort of your home
  • Free to express yourself during challenging poses
  • You're able to pause a pose
  • You can take a break to stretch if you need to
  • You can customize your practice
  • You can advance at your own pace
  • You can choose the courses and instructors that appeal to you
  • You can practice anywhere, anytime

Online Yoga is Great for One or for the Whole Family

what is online yoga

Getting the family to practice an active lifestyle can sometimes be difficult, but engaging in online yoga sessions together allows the family to work out as a group.

Classes can be taken when everyone is available and it eliminates the need to drive to a brick and mortar studio. By selecting courses together, the whole family can take part and feel more in charge of their individual fitness goals.

This also helps to keep everyone motivated. Because you're working out with family, you won't feel the judgments you might feel from strangers in a studio setting. Yet, you'll reap the benefits of practicing with others. Best of all, this type of group participation will keep everyone motivated.

Where to Find the Time

We all live hectic lives, but that's no reason to let a lack of time prevent us from living healthier lives. In fact, the busier you are, the more important it is to find time to relax and unwind.

Many people find that it helps to schedule a time to exercise or relax, just as they might schedule a meeting or doctor's appointment. This way, that block of time is already set aside.

If you're taking online yoga classes with your family, you may need to reorganize other priorities to make time for everyone to come together. They don't have to be long sessions. After all, what is online yoga without the flexibility it provides? That's why there's a wide range of course styles with some as short as 20 minutes.

Yoga at Your Own Pace

Aside from the general question of what is online yoga, many people commonly ask how often they should be practicing. Unlike studio yoga with predetermined class sessions, online yoga is at your own discretion. One of the advantages is being able to work at your own pace. Especially if you take yoga up to relax and manage stress, you should feel free to practice whenever the urge strikes.

But, if you want to reap the physical benefits of yoga, bear in mind that your progress depends on how often you work out. The more time you spend practicing, the faster your muscles will grow and adapt. Again, it all depends on what you expect to gain from yoga.

Conclusion of What  Is Online Yoga

While you may be just getting started with yoga, you can spend years mastering the poses and reaping countless physical and mental benefits.

To get to that point, however, you have to dedicate yourself to following through with your classes and stay committed, even when you're not feeling your best. You may not always feel motivated, but, by making room for yoga in your life, you'll feel more interested in pursuing the practice.

How To Have a Successful Yoga Practice

First, dedicate a space in your home to your practice. By designating an area and, if possible, using it for nothing else, that space will be a constant reminder.

You'll feel more motivated if space remains set up and you may find yourself practicing yoga instead of sitting on the sofa to watch television or sitting at a computer. Keeping that area set up can also help you encourage other family members to take part, especially when they see how it's making you feel healthier and happier.

Schedule Your Practice

It's also important to make time each day, even if it's just four a 15 or 30-minute session. This will help you set up a daily routine, and you'll get in the practice of doing it as a part of your day.

Additionally, this will help your body adjust to the new demands you're placing on it, and your muscles will strengthen each day.

Go Slow

Finally, remember not to advance beyond your skills. If some classes seem too demanding for you, it may be wise to take a step back and return to an earlier phase. Yoga is supposed to help relax you and tone your body, but none of that will be possible if you injure yourself.

Taking it easy and advancing only when you're ready will help you maximize the benefits of this practice. After all, one of the most significant incentives of online yoga is that you can work at your own pace and in your own time.

  1. I never really thought about yoga online before. I’ve always loved yoga but I work retail so I’ve always had a hard time finding a class time that I can commit to on a regular basis. The idea of being able to take a class whenever it’s convenient for me is great. Thanks so much for sharing this.

    • Hi Briana,

For years I practiced yoga at my local studio, and then life got very busy. So, finding a time and a class that fit my schedule was my issue too. Now, having so many choices available to me at any time is my issue. 🙂 Online yoga is the greatest invention since sliced bread! (my opinion) xo Thanks for connecting.
